Bil & Cora Baird: 4 Early Films

For over 30 years the name Bil Baird's Marionettes was synonymous with American Puppetry. Even audiences today know them through the charming Lonely Goatherd song in the film The Sound of Music.

The Bairds created hundreds of commercials, specials and guest appearances for television and films, performed numerous times on Broadway, at World's Fairs, and on tour for The US State Department representing American Culture in India, Russia, Turkey, and all over the world. Bil Baird's book, The Art of The Puppet is considered by many to be the definitive book on the history and art of puppetry.

Wee Cooper O'Fife: (color: 6 minutes) is a tuneful short film with vocal provided by Burl Ives about the Wee Cooper who married a beautiful, but unattentive wife. The resolution of his problem is unabashedly politically incorrect!

Gardening is Fun (La Alegria en el Huerto) (color, 10 min), produced for Oficina del Coordinador de Asuntos Interamericanos was Bil Baird's first film. Produced in Spanish, but quite easy to understand in any language because it is over 90% music and movement. Bil's famous Snarky Parker character has a dream in which he plants and harvests a giant vegetable garden. All goes well until his garden is attacked by equally giant insects. Originally produced for the US Government to promote farming in Latin America.

Party Lines (color, 15 min., 1946) was produced for the Bell Phone Co. This film taught school children all over the country what party lines were, how they worked, how to use them. In particular, this film deals with the problems of sharing a phone line with your neighbors. Baird's humorous approach to the issues of phone etiquette is visually hilarious.

Adventure in Telezonia (color, 18 min., 1947) was the second film produced for Bell Telephone. In this adventure Bobby, a school age boy is searching for his lost dog. He is magically taken to the land of Telezonia where he learns the proper way to dial, use directory assistance, party lines, and proper phone manners to successfully locate his pet.

This DVD was made directly from Bil Baird's personal copies of these films. We made some of the transfers with Bil Baird many years ago. Other films were purchased from his private collection at auction, and were directly transferred. This DVD is therefore not a "copy of a copy", but rather made directly from the original prints.

They represent, perhaps, the finest examples of the classic Bil Baird Marionette's style. This style entailed beautifully sculpted and articulated figures, excellent voicing and manipulation, and the trademark use of "interchangeable" heads for almost all characters. This switching of the marionette heads for different scenes allowed for dramatic expression changes not usually possible in live performances.
